Marked the genesis of SNK's legendary fighting franchise, uniting iconic characters from FATAL FURY and ART OF FIGHTERING with unexpected combatants from PSYCHO SOLDIER and IKARI WARRIORS in a revolutionary crossover.
This groundbreaking title introduced the series' signature 3v3 team battles where pre-defined national squads (though often featuring fighters unrelated to their designated countries) competed for supremacy.
The narrative centered around Rugal Bernstein, a power-hungry arms dealer who orchestrated the tournament to collect statues of defeated champions, with Kyo Kusanagi's team ultimately thwarting his scheme14. Notably, this inaugural entry lacked team customization – players battled with fixed character lineups, a feature later revised in the PS2 remake "KOF '94 Rebout".
This foundational installment established core mechanics that would define the series:
· Cross-over rosters blending SNK's popular franchises
· Strategic team-based combat requiring coordinated character selection
· Dramatic boss battles (Rugal required consecutive victories to defeat)
· The emergence of fan-favorite characters like Kyo's trio through tournament success
Originally released on Neo Geo arcade systems, it sparked a global phenomenon that continues evolving three decades later.
